The Ecology Center will soon enter its 35th year as a nonprofit, membership-based environmental organization dedicated to building a just and healthy environment through grassroots organizing, advocacy, education, and demonstration programs, including:
-- Toxic Pollution and Human Health
Were a national leader in the movement to protect human health from dangerous pollutants. Our work on medical waste the third leading source of highly toxic mercury and dioxin into the environment has persuaded over 90% of the regions medical waste generators to close down incinerators and use cleaner disposal methods.
-- Livable Communities
Urban sprawl destroys our best farmland and open spaces, and its leaving older central cities economically distressed and beset with social problems. We work for policies and programs that keep rural areas undeveloped, revitalize blighted urban areas, and build communities with strong neighborhoods, good schools, and walkable streets.
-- Clean Car Campaign
Automobiles rank among the leading causes of global warming and air pollution. We co-direct a national coalition of environmental organizations promoting the speedy development of clean cars cleanly manufactured vehicles with low emissions and high fuel efficiency.
-- Environmental Education
Our traveling GEE-WOW! education program reaches thousands of students and teachers each year, promoting environmental awareness through hands-on programs, educational resources, environmental festivals, and auto-free Smart Movin projects.
-- Stopping Global Warming
We work to reduce the emission of global warming gases by promoting transit and non-motorized transportation, energy efficiency in households and businesses, fuel-efficient vehicles, and the increasing use of renewable fuels.
-- Recycling
Recycle Ann Arbor is the most successful recycling program in the State of Michigan, and regarded as one of the five best programs in the U.S. It also sells salvaged building materials at its ReUse Center, displays green building materials at its demonstration EnHouse, and provides services for townships and businesses outside of Ann Arbor.
