Go! Outdoors Program Featured on Detroit PBS TV Show

June/July Issue, 2004

Detroit Public Television’s weekly program “Get Up-Get Out!” recently featured a segment on the GO! Outdoors program, a joint venture between the Ecology Center and the Ann Arbor Public Schools. Funded with a grant from the Community Foundation of Southeastern Michigan, Go! Outdoors encourages outdoor activities for children and their parents by organizing after school nature clubs and field trips.

The March 27, 2004 “Get Up-Get Out!” segment showed Go! Outdoors volunteer naturalists at Ann Arbor Public School’s Winter Survival Site teaching Family Field Trip participants how to build a “cooking” fire. It also included an interview with Tawny Gapinski, Ecology Center Environmental Educator and member of the Go! Outdoors’ steering committee, who explained why encouraging children and their families to go outdoors is important.

The “Get Up! Get Out!” program airs each Friday at 5 pm and Saturday at 9 am. Each half-hour long program encourages young people to GO! Outdoors and enjoy their environment. Some of the activities recently shown on the television program include rock climbing at a local rock climbing gym and cooking with vegetables grown organically in downtown Detroit.

If you are interested in viewing a copy of the March 27 program please feel free to contact the Ecology Center (734-761-3186). Or if you live in the Ann Arbor area and are interested in attending a GO! Outdoors Family Field Trip, contact John Stahly at 994-2300 x 217.
