EcoRide 2005

Great Weather!
More Riders!
More Pledges!

August/September Issue, 2005

Beautiful weather greeted many enthusiastic bike riders (and a few rollerbladers) on Sunday, June 26, at Greenhills School for the Ecology Center’s annual EcoRide fundraiser. The two long routes had to take an unexpected detour when Pontiac Trail construction began that morning. Volunteers saved the day by quickly creating signs, re-marking maps, and heading out to the site to flag down riders and steer them in the new direction. Riders seemed to take the detour in stride and continued on to enjoy their routes.

The 80-plus degree temperature was actually a break in the 90-degree days surrounding the EcoRide, but that didn’t make the rest stops and ice cream, iced tea, and Fuze Beverages at Greenhills any less popular.

While cooling down, riders enjoyed food, massages, and demos and information from Ann Arbor Cyclery, Varsity Ford, AATA,Washtenaw Bicycling and Walking Coalition, ReCellular, and the City of Ann Arbor. Kids joined in craft projects and face painting.

There was also great music by Free Funk with Muruga on drums, Peter “Madcat” Ruth on harmonica, and even Ken Kozora playing a bicycle wheel with a plastic spoon!

The 2005 EcoRide had more riders bringing in more pledges than last year! As of the day of the ride, nearly $40,000 had already been raised, with more coming in as riders continue to collect their pledges after the event.

See the EcoRide section of our web site for more pictures (soon) from the event and the final fundraising results.

A big thank-you to all the riders, hard-working volunteers, sponsors, and organiza-tions that made EcoRide2005 a memorable and successful event!
