Remembering Julia Morris

August/September Issue, 2005

The Ecology Center lost a longtime friend earlier this year when Julia Morris died from protracted complications suffered after a fall. She was 82 years old. “Judy” was a consistent and generous supporter of the Ecology Center since we opened in 1970. She had been an avid and active environmentalist, starting long before 1970, and until her final days.

Julia worked as a nursing instructor at the University of Michigan in the 1950s and, more recently, managed the Huron Valley Tennis Club for over twenty years. She devoted countless hours to a wide range of civic organizations, particularly those concerned with human services and the environment.

She was passionate about protecting the Earth, and she spread the word religiously with friends, acquaintances, and colleagues, as well as with Ann Arbor News readers, who could often read her letters to the editor. When it came to the environment, Julia also truly “walked the walk.” With her husband and another couple, she donated a 240-acre parcel of land to the Southeast Michigan Land Conservancy, now called the Morris-Reichert Nature Preserve. She started up a recycling program at her tennis club. Working with Ecology Center board member David Wright, she built a large solar panel system at Huron High School in Ann Arbor. She was a leading backer of numerous environmental campaigns and events, often anonymously. She didn’t seek credit -- she sought a better world.

Julia left a generous bequest to the Ecology Center to help us carry on her legacy. The Ecology Center will truly miss this wonderful woman, and we send our fondest wishes to her family.
