Research Tools

Investigating issues surrounding chemical hazards is complex. People have questions, corporations are often secretive, government regulations are insufficient and slow to change, and everyone is left exposed without knowing it.

It can be hard to know where to start. Since 2006, we’ve been designing and conducting studies that get at these tricky issues and leveraging our expertise and results to create a safer, more equitable world. 

Healthy Stuff has developed a participatory research model for exploring questions that communities have about chemical hazards in water, air, soil, and consumer products. Sometimes we test products and environmental media in our own lab, using an X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyzer and a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR). In addition to our internal lab capabilities, we collaborate extensively with academic researchers and third-party contract labs.   

Participatory Research

We leverage our expertise in toxics testing to empower communities, NGOs, and non-profits to design investigative studies that meet their needs.

Working with our partners, Healthy Stuff develops analytical methods and generates data on everyday chemical hazards present in the environment that put people, animals, and ecosystems at risk. We help other labs build capacity so they can conduct testing themselves.

This is campaign connected science, and it has the benefit of shifting the power dynamics endemic to institutionalized methods of inquiry.
