If soap and water are not readily available, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers in a clinical setting are considered best practice for hand hygiene to prevent the spread of SARS/Cov-2 virus (the virus that causes COVID-19).
- Alcohol is often listed on the label as ethanol, ethyl alcohol, isopropanol or 2-propanol
- Alcohol solutions containing 60–80% alcohol are most effective
- Hand sanitizers that contain less than 60 percent alcohol are not effective
- Hand sanitizers should not contain additional ingredients beyond 1–3% glycerol or humectants to protect hands
- Do not use hand sanitizers listed on the FDA’s Hand Sanitizer Do Not Use List
- Do not use hand sanitizers that are labeled “alcohol-free”
