In the United States, we’re at an inflection point. For decades, fossil fuel company PR drowned out the warnings of scientists, downplayed the dangers of the climate crisis, and flatly questioned the science. But now the evidence is all around us: wildfires sweeping the west; hundred-year floods; severe weather events at a frequency never seen before. This is the decade when the world must act.
In 1969, the year before the Ecology Center was founded, the Cuyahoga River caught fire, one of the sparks of the national reckoning that inspired the creation of the modern environmental movement, and the enactment of the Clean Water Act, the EPA, and all of the U.S.’s bedrock environmental laws. Today, we are on the brink of an even bigger transformation.
With your support, the Ecology Center is fighting the climate crisis at every level.
In Michigan, the Ecology Center helped draft the recommendations for Governor Whitmer’s Healthy Climate Plan, and fought to strengthen it. We’ve fought DTE Energy and Consumers Power in cases before the Michigan Public Service Commission to provide more clean energy, and make it available to everyone.
At the local level, we’ve been a key architect of some of the country’s most ambitious carbon neutrality plans, the state’s first electric vehicle infrastructure ordinance, and local procurement policies that leverage the financial clout of public sector purchasing to advance climate and sustainability goals.
