Job Posting: Environmental Educator

The Ecology Center (EC) seeks an enthusiastic and reliable educator to lead activities at regional K-12 schools and community events. This is a part-time position with hours fluctuating up to 20 hours per week. Work will be based out of the Ecology Center’s main office in Ann Arbor, however a significant portion of time will be spent at schools and events throughout Washtenaw County.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Environmental Educator will utilize a range of skills to educate and engage learners about environmental issues. Programs focus on topics such as: recycling, composting, sustainable living, and environmental health. 

Specific duties will include:

Leading Educational Programs

  • Deliver established, age-appropriate classroom workshops at Washtenaw County schools
  • Lead bus tours of Ann Arbor’s Resource Recovery Facilities with Ann Arbor Public schools
  • Lead zero waste programs for students at Freeman Environmental Education Center 
  • Host information tables with educational activities at community and after school events
  • Assist with delivery of presentations to community members of all ages

General/Administrative

  • Inventory and maintain an organized education stockroom
  • Prepare education materials and clean and stock them after use
  • Assist with construction of education materials
  • Attend weekly Education Team meetings
  • Track activities in the classroom for reporting purposes

Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in education, environmental science, or related field
  • Formal or nonformal teaching experience with learners of various ages 
  • Willingness to learn and adapt 
  • Independent self-starter who can also work as part of a team
  • Detail-oriented with a strong sense of responsibility and reliability
  • Comfortable engaging audiences of all ages
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Reliable access to a personal vehicle for travel and transport of educational materials

Hours and Compensation

This is a part-time hourly position, 20 hours per week at $20 per hour. Most work will be weekdays between the hours of 8am and 4pm, with occasional evening or weekend hours.
